Athlete Anecdote - Nutrition

As a student-athlete, nutrition is a key part of my life. To perform my best in volleyball or lacrosse, I need plenty of energy - making good nutrition essential. During the volleyball season when I had practice every day after school, I tried to eat a balanced lunch every day, which my school provides. However, I didn’t do much beyond that. Before games, I payed close attention to what I eat, aiming to consume some carbs and protein for energy. Wanting to improve my nutrition with a limited foundation, I turned to my friend who runs cross country for advice.
She talked about her routine: on school days she eats protein bars (which are a quick and easy snack) before running, and eats a big dinner afterwards; on weekend practices, she said she needs a bit of caffeine to wake up (she runs on Saturday mornings) but recommends eating a good breakfast an hour before instead. Before races, she tries to increase hydration, drinking a lot of water on days before (especially during warm weather), and then cuts back a few hours before her race. After races, she said that her teammates’ parents bring a lot of food and she loves to get some electrolytes and protein to help her muscles recover. I know that the amount of food she has to eat is hard for her since she has a history of very disordered eating, but she said “I do it so I’m able to run,” which is really important to her.
Her story inspired me to think more about what I put into my body before and after I exercise, as well as when I’m not exercising. Her story helps me be more aware of what I’m eating, but it also helps me understand that eating less is definitely not always the healthier thing to do.
